ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [HEATHER OF THE CLIFFS.] 1902.
271/2x123/4 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins, some affecting image; repaired bottom right corner. Japan.
One of two images in a decorative set Mucha designed (the other being Thistle of the Beach). These represented a departure from his usual decorative panels in that the subject matter was tied to a particular place. Mucha himself referred to this work as La Brettone, as the woman is dressed in the ethnic garb of Brittany, and the sea holly is indigenous to the northwestern parts of France. Even though he retains his signature circle motif in the background, this panel marks a turning point in Mucha's artistic vision, that he would emphasize more and more during his Czech period, in which he focused far more on ethnic imagery than generic decoration.
